the Authorised Version of Genesis 32:24-32 is infamously unclear due to a confusion of personal pronouns

He asked him for what was his to be his and he gave it to him. Off he went, packed it with it, and, taking it with him, left him there. He met them, and then and them, paid him and her and it was soon empty, since he had spent it all on them (and her), and then famine struck him and them and all of it.

He hungered, worked for them, looking after them and longed to eat theirs. But then he spoke to him and he had a revelation. ‘They get theirs; I shall go to him and ask if I can work for him,’ he thought. So he went back to see him.

But while he was still a long way off, he saw him and he ran to him and he began, ‘I am no longer worthy…’ but he kissed him, and gave him his ring. He called for him to bring a coat, and for them to fetch shoes. He could not get a word in. He threw his arms around him and threw them a party, inviting them and killing him.

He said ‘He was lost but he is found; he was dead, but he is alive – tee hee hee! Sing a hymn!’
